"It was a great weekend, especially after a difficult couple of rounds" – Booth-Amos on his podium double at home
WorldSSP’s lone British rider put on a show at home, and while the race win eluded him, he earned vital points to keep his Riders’ Championship dreams kicking
FIM Supersport World Championship rider Tom Booth-Amos (PTR Triumph Factory Racing) made a meal of his home round as he sank his teeth into a pair of P2 podium finishes at the Prosecco DOC UK Round. His 40 total points earned landed him back into third place in the Riders’ Championship standings after his Misano Race 2 DNF bounced him back to fifth place. Now, ahead of the Hungarian Round, he finds himself only 17 points back from Can Oncu (Yamaha BLU CRU Evan Bros Team) in second behind Stefano Manzi (Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing) as Championship leader.
TWO-PODIUM WEEKEND: “I felt really strong on Sunday, I actually thought it was a bit easier than Saturday and that the pace was better”
Booth-Amos’s home weekend wound back the clock to prior rounds like Cremona and Phillip Island; he made his UK Round his third round of the season so far, in which he lands a podium double. He even nearly replicated this campaign’s Phillip Island feat of a race win and a P2. Booth-Amos had led the entirety of Race 2, and going into the final five laps, it looked as though home glory would be his. Can Oncu (Yamaha BLU CRU Evan Bros Team) behind him, however, was gathering speed behind him, and when Booth-Amos’s worn-down tires saw him leave the door open in the Melbourne Loop, a gap which Oncu exploited, and held onto to win the race.
On his Race 2, Booth-Amos, “I felt really strong on Sunday, I actually thought it was a bit easier than Saturday and that the pace was better. My dashboard’s lap timer wasn’t working, so I need to look back and check. It was unfortunate that in the last five laps of Race 2, I was struggling a lot with the tyre and arm pump. That’s why Can came through; I made a mistake, and that was it - the race was over. A little bit gutted, but also very happy to have gotten two podiums at home”
GETTING IT DONE: “It’s nice to be back on the podium at home because it’s not only home for me, but it’s also the home for my team and the manufacturer, so it’s special for them as well”
150 kilometres from his hometown in Stafford, England, Booth-Amos shone in front of family and friends not only of his, but also of his team’s, but in front of the many Triumph fans in attendance. The UK-owned motorcycle manufacturer’s headquarters are even closer than Booth-Amos’s hometown, located in Hinckley, 120 kilometres away from Donington Park.
“It was a very good weekend, especially after a difficult couple of rounds, so it’s nice to be back on the podium at home because it’s not only home for me, but it’s also the home for my team and the manufacturer, so it’s special for them as well. I’m extremely happy to have finalised the contract deal early. I thought the negotiation would have carried on, but they sat me down and we agreed on a deal for next year or so. I’m very happy and grateful that they believe in me, and I’m happy we can carry on again next season.
